SCUBA TECHNIQUES FOR SHALLOW WATER FOUNDATION AND SCOUR INVESTIGATIONS
THE APPLICATION IS DESCRIBED OF SCUBA DIVING TECHNIQUES TO FOUNDATION AND SCOUR INVESTIGATIONS IN THE SEA, SPECIFICALLY IN SHALLOW WATER SITES. SHALLOW WATER IS DEFINED AS THOSE REGIONS OF THE SEA FLOOR LYING AT WATER DEPTHS OF 100 FEET OR LESS. PIER EVALUATION, FOUNDATION FAILURE, ANTENNA FOUNDATION, AND SCOUR AND FOUNDATION CRITERIA INVESTIGATIONS ARE DESCRIBED. INVESTIGATION RESULTS SHOW THE VALUE OF PLACING TRAINED OBSERVERS DIRECTLY ON THE SEA FLOOR AT THE SITE OF INTEREST. VISUAL INSPECTION FROM THE SURFACE COULD NOT PROVIDE THE REQUIRED INFORMATION. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE STUDY OF SCOUR PHENOMENA UTILIZING SCUBA TECHNIQUES SHOULD RESULT IN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE AGENTS AND PROCESSES WHICH PRODUCE SCOUR.
