THE USE OF PORTABLE SEISMIC REFRACTION EQUIPMENT FOR FOUNDATION STUDIES
PORTABLE SEISMIC REFRACTION EQUIPMENT CAN BE USED EFFICIENTLY FOR SHALLOW (LESS THAN 100 FEET) SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION. IN FOUNDATION STUDIES UNDER SITES OF LARGE STRUCTURES SEISMIC METHODS CAN REDUCE THE NUMBER OF BORINGS REQUIRED. THE PORTABLE EQUIPMENT CAN EASILY BE OPERATED BY TWO MEN AND FOR MOST INVESTIGATIONS DOES NOT REQUIRE USE OF EXPLOSIVES. STEPS IN THE OPERATION ARE OUTLINED AND ILLUSTRATED BY DIAGRAMS. THE MEASURING TAPE IS PLACED ALONG THE DESIGNATED COURSE WITH THE GEOPHONE AT ONE END. SHOCK WAVES ARE INITIATED ALONG THE COURSE AND TIME READINGS FOR TRAVEL OF THE WAVES TO THE GEOPHONE ARE TAKEN. THE DATA ARE PLOTTED ON A TIME-DISTANCE GRAPH. OUTSIDE NOISE INTERFERENCE CAN BE DISTINGUISHED FROM THE CONTROLLED SHOCK WAVE BY USE OF THE VISUAL DISPLAY SYSTEM. NOT ONLY CAN THE MATERIAL BELOW GROUND SURFACE BE GENERALLY CLASSIFIED, BUT A DEPTH COMPUTATION CAN BE MADE ON EACH SUCCESSIVE STRATUM. /GA/
