GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF A LANDSLIDE EMPLOYING SEISMIC EXPLORATION TECHNIQUE
SEISMIC REFRACTION INVESTIGATIONS, USING A ONE-CHANNEL SEISMOGRAPH, WERE MADE ON A LARGE LANDSLIDE THREATENING A 100-FOOT SECTION OF THE NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD ROUTE ALONG THE EEL RIVER NEAR ISLAND MOUNTAIN, CALIF. THE FRANCISCAN GROUP (FAULTED AND SHEARED META-SEDIMENTARY ROCKS WITH SERPENTINITE INTRUSIONS), AND THE OVERLYING SLIDE DEPOSITS ARE SEPARATED BY AN INTERMEDIATE ZONE DECLINEATED LARGELY OF CLAY CONTAINING BOULDERS. MOVEMENT PROBABLY TAKES PLACE ALONG SEVERAL SMALL, DISCONTINUOUS CURVED SURFACES PARALLEL TO THE HILLSIDE SURFACE. THE SLIDE APPARENTLY STARTED WITH A SMALL SLOPE FAILURE NEAR THE RIVER LEVEL AND HAS GROWN UPWARD AND OUTWARD. /GA/
