THE DETERMINATION OF IN SITU STRESSES IN ROCK AN CONCRETE
A TECHNIQUE IS DESCRIBED WHICH EMPLOYS PHOTOELASTIC COATINGS IN CONJUNCTION WITH STRESS RELIEF PROCEDURES IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE DIRECTION AND SEPARATE MAGNITUDES OF THE PRINCIPAL SURFACE STRESSES IN ROCK AND CONCRETE SPECIMENS. THE THEORETICAL BASIS OF THE TECHNIQUE IS FULLY DESCRIBED, AND A SURVEY IS GIVEN OF ALTERNATIVE PHOTO- ELASTIC METHODS OF RESIDUAL STRESS DETERMINATION BASED ON THE OVERCORING TECHNIQUE. SOME REPRESENTATIVE DATA CONCERN- ING THE HOLE-DEPTH EFFECT IN ROCK AND CONCRETE ARE GIVEN, AND THE EFFECT OF CONCRETE AGGREGATE SIZE IS DISCUSSED. /RRL/A/
