STRENGTH OF ROCK
A NEW METHOD INVOLVING THE USE OF AN ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE STRAIN GAUGE FOR MEASURING ROCK STRESSES IN SITU IS DESCRIBED. THE GAUGE DESCRIBED INCORPORATES A WATER-PROOFED STRAIN CELL, WITH THE USE OF STANDARD DIAMONDCORE DRILLING EQUIPMENT IT ENABLES MEASUREMENTS TO BE MADE MORE THAN 100 FT FROM THE ROCK FACE. PNEUMATIC AND MANUALLY OPERATED TOOLS WERE DEVELOPED FOR INSTALLING THE STRAIN CELLS AT THE END OF THE BORE HOLES. /RRL/
