PHOTOELASTIC SENSORS FOR MEASURING LINEAR DEFORMATIONS
THE DESIGN AND OPERATION ARE DISCUSSED OF SENSOR STRIPS PREPARED FROM AN OPTICALLY ACTIVE MATERIAL WHICH ALTERS IN APPEARANCE WHEN SUBJECTED TO STRESSES ON A CONCRETE SURFACE DURING SMALL CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE. SIX TYPES OR SHAPES OF STRIP SENSOR ARE DESCRIBED. THEY WERE FOUND TO HAVE THE REQUIRED ACCURACY AND DURABILITY AND TO BE SUITABLE IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES AS A REPLACEMENT FOR MECHANICAL TENSOMETERS AND STANDARD SENSORS; THEY ARE IRREPLACEABLE IN FIELD CONDITIONS FOR LONG TERM TESTS. /RRL/LCPC/
