BUILDING A TONOMETER INTENDED FOR MEASURING THE ACTIVITY OF WATER IN CLAYEY PASTES
A DIFFERENTIAL TONOMETER INTENDED FOR MEASURING THE ACTIVITY OF WATER IN CLAYEY PASTES IS DESCRIBED. THE DETECTION DEVICE IS MADE UP OF THE THERMOCOUPLE DESIGNED BY RICHARDS AND OGATA. A SILVER RING IS SUSPENDED ON A CONSTANTAN AND CHROMEL-PLATINUM WIRE. THE EVAPORATION OF A DROP OF WATER SUSPENDED ON THE RING IS A FUNCTION OF THE VAPOUR TENSION IN THE CENTRE WHERE THE THERMOCOUPLE IS INSERTED. THE ENDOTHERMIC EFFECT PROVIDES A MEASURE OF THE ACTIVITY OF THE SOLVENT. THE RANGE OF APPLICATION OF THE INSTRUMENT IS DEMONSTRATED BY MEANS OF SEVERAL EXAMPLES. /LCPC/A/RRL/
