MOTORBUSES ON MOTORWAYS
FOR PASSENGER FLOWS EXCEEDING 2500 PER HOUR (THE EQUIVALENT OF 50 OR MORE BUS-LOADS), THE RESERVATION OF A BUS-ONLY LANE ON THE MOTORWAY APPEARS TO BE THE BEST TECHNICAL SOLUTION. FOR PASSENGER FLOWS OF LESS THAN 2,500 PER HOUR, BUSES CAN RUN IN LANES OPEN TO ALL TRAFFIC BUT WOULD ENJOY PRIORITY OF ACCESS AFFORDED BY A MOTORWAY CONTROL AND MONITORING SYSTEM. IN THE RANGE OF CAPACITIES OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT, THERE IS A WIDE GAP BETWEEN THE RAILWAYS (CAPACITY EXCEEDING 10,000 PASSENGERS PER HOUR ON METROPOLITAN, EXPRESS-METROPOLITAN, OR SUBURBAN RAILWAYS) AND SUBURBAN BUS ROUTES, WHOSE CAPACITY IS MORE MODEST (1000 PASSENGERS PER HOUR). CERTAIN MORE OR LESS REVOLUTIONARY TRANSPORT SYSTEMS, WHICH HAVE NO BACKGROUND OF EXPERIENCE, HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED TO FILL THIS GAP. THE BUS IS A WELL- TRIED SOLUTION, REQUIRING ONLY MINIMAL INVESTMENT, WHOSE OPERATING COSTS COULD BE SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED BY THE USE OF MOTORWAYS. /AUTHOR/
