ATTITUDES TO PEDESTRIANISATION IN THE CITY CENTRE
PEDESTRIANISATION (A NEW PHENOMENON IN ENGLISH CITIES), IS THE CLOSING OF EXISTING STREETS TO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC, AND LIMITING THEIR USE TO PEDESTRIANS. THE PEDESTRIAN PRECINCT PLAN IS OUTLINED WITH THE PRELIMINARY SURVEYS WHICH LEAD TO ITS PROPOSAL, AND THE WAYS IN WHICH THE GENERAL PUBLIC WERE INFORMED AND INVOLVED IN ITS DEVELOPMENT. MORE OPPOSITION TO PEDESTRIANISATION WAS EXPECTED THAN WAS ENCOUNTERED. ALTHOUGH THE CAR APPEARS NECESSARY IN MODERN CIVILIZATION, IT SEEMS PEOPLE ARE PREPARED TO DISPENSE WITH CARS AND ACCEPT PEDESTRIANISATION. THE PROPOSED PEDESTRIAN PRECINCT IN CHICHESTER IS ALMOST CO-INCIDENT WITH THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT, AND THIS SEEMS ACCEPTABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, WHICH SEEMS TO SHOW THAT THE IDEA OF A CITY AS A CIVILIZED PLACE IS CONSIDERED BY PEOPLE AS AN IDEA WORTH PRESERVING.
