AN EVALUATION OF REGRESSION ANALYSIS AND THE GRAVITY MODEL IN THE PHOENIX URBAN AREA
REGRESSION EQUATIONS FOR TRAFFIC GENERATION WERE DEVELOPED, AND GRAVITY MODELS DERIVED AND CALIBRATED ON DATA OBTAINED IN THE 1956-57 SURVEY CARRIED OUT IN THE PHOENIX URBAN AREA. INVENTORIES WERE MADE OF ECONOMIC DATA AND STREET NETWORK CHARACTERISTICS IN 1964. DATA FROM THESE INVENTORIES WERE USED AS INPUT TO THE MODELS TO FORECAST TRAVEL PATTERNS; THIS FORECAST WAS COMPARED WITH ACTUAL 1964 TRAVEL PATTERNS AS MEASURED BY SCREEN LINE GROUND COUNTS. THE SIMULATION PROJECT IS DESCRIBED, AND THIS METHOD OF FORECASTING FUTURE URBAN TRAVEL IS EVALUATED. /RRL/
