SOIL STABILIZATION FOR MILITARY ROAD CONSTRUCTION: LABORATORY TESTS ON THE STABILIZATION OF A HEAVY CLAY WITH CEMENT
LABORATORY TESTS WERE CONDUCTED TO ASSESS THE POSSIBILITY OF STABILIZING A HEAVY CLAY WITH ORDINARY PORTLAND CEMENT WITH OR WITHOUT THE ADDITION OF LIME AND 'VINSOL' RESIN. THE TESTS CARRIED OUT COMPRISED IDENTIFICATION, COMPACTION, C.B. R. AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTS. SUFFICIENTLY PROMISING RESULTS WERE OBTAINED WITH CEMENT STABILIZATION TO JUSTIFY FULL-SCALE TRIALS. ALTHOUGH THE LIMITATIONS OF FIELD PROCESSES HAVE NOT YET BEEN STUDIED, THE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT PROPORTIONS OF THE ORDER OF 20% OF CEMENT MIGHT PROVE SATISFACTORY IN PRACTICE. THE ADDITION OF SMALL PERCENTAGES OF LIME SHOWED MARKED IMPROVEMENT, BUT VINSOL-RESIN WAS LESS EFFECTIVE.
