A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION OF THE PROPERTIES AND STABILIZATION OF THREE SOILS FROM SIERRA LEONE
A LABORATORY STUDY IS DESCRIBED OF SAMPLES OF A LATERITIC GRAVEL AND TWO SANDS FROM THE BO-PORT LOKOTAIAMA ROAD IN SIERRA LEONE. THE STRENGTH OF CEMENT-STABILIZED SOILS WAS DETERMINED BY MEASURING THEIR CYLINDER PENETRATION RATIOS (C.P.R.), AND THEN REMOVING THE SPECIMENS FROM THE MOULD AND MEASURING THEIR UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS. THE STRENGTHS OBTAINED SUGGESTS THAT WITH BOTH THE LATERITIC GRAVEL AND THE SANDS AN ADEQUATE BASE MATERIAL CAN BE PRODUCED BY STABILIZATION WITH 3 TO 4% OF CEMENT AND COMPACTING TO NOT LESS THAN 95% OF THE MAXIMUM DRY DENSITY FOR BRITISH STANDARD COMPACTION.
