CRITERIA USED IN TESTING SOIL-CEMENT
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHODS OF EVALUATING SOIL-CEMENT MIXTURES IN THE LABORATORY IS REVIEWED IN THE UNITED STATES AND IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TEST AND THE STRENGTH VALUE USED AS A CRITERION AFTER 7 DAYS AT 250 LB/SQ INCH. IT IS SHOWN THAT THIS VALUE HAS NO PRECISE NUMERICAL SIGNIFICANCE, SINCE NO WORK HAS EVER BEEN UNDERTAKEN TO OBTAIN A PRECISE CORRELATION OF THE UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF LABORATORY SPECIMENS OF A SOIL-CEMENT MIXTURE WITH THE PERFORMANCE ON THE ROAD OF A MIXTURE OF THE SAME COMPOSITION. HOWEVER, IN VIEW OF THE CONSISTENTLY SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE OF SOIL-CEMENT ROADS CONSTRUCTED HITHERTO ON THE BASIS OF THE 250 LB/SQ IN. CRITERION, IT CAN BE CONCLUDED THAT THE FIGURE IS OF THE CORRECT ORDER OF MAGNITUDE. IT APPEARS, HOWEVER, THAT IT MAY BE UNNECESSARILY HIGH FOR SANDY SOILS. THE USE OF THE 7-DAY CURING PERIOD IN THE TESTING OF SOIL-CEMENT IS ALSO CONSIDERED. ALTHOUGH THERE APPEARS TO BE NO BASIC REASON FOR THE SELECTION OF THIS PERIOD, IT IS FELT THAT IT OFFERS A REASONABLE COMPROMISE BETWEEN THE NEED FOR COMPARATIVELY QUICK RESULTS AND THE NEED TO OBTAIN AN APPROXIMATE MEASURE OF THE ULTIMATE STRENGTH.
