DESIGN OF EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT SOIL
THE OBJECT OF THIS REPORT IS TO DEVELOP A DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT SOIL TO ENSURE THAT A STABILITY FAILURE DOES NOT OCCUR DURING CONSTRUCTION. THE KEY TO A DESIGN THAT ENSURES STABILITY IS AN ACCURATE PREDICTION OF STABILITY. THE LOGICAL PROCEDURE FOR EVALUATING THE ABILITY TO PREDICT FACTOR OF SAFETY IS TO EVALUATE THE METHOD OF ANALYSIS, THE SOIL ENGINEERING DATA WHICH MUST BE INPUT INTO THE ANALYSIS, AND THEN THE PREDICTED FACTOR OF SAFETY OF AN EMBANKMENT ON CLAY. ALL THESE TOPICS ARE CONSIDERED IN THIS REPORT. SINCE CONSTRUCTION CONTROL IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE DESIGN OF EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT SOIL, THE USES AND LIMITATIONS OF FIELD MEASUREMENTS FOR CONSTRUCTION CONTROL ARE REVIEWED AND SUMMARIZED. FINALLY, A DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR EMBANKMENTS ON SOFT SOIL IS PRESENTED. /FHWA/
