SOIL SUPPORT AND STRUCTURAL COEFFICIENTS FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN PENNSYLVANIA
AN INVESTIGATION OF STRUCTURAL COEFFICIENTS AND SOIL SUPPORT VALUES FOR THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN UTILIZING DATA OBTAINED FROM IN-PLACE TESTING OF IN-SERVICE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT WHILE SOME OF THE PARAMETERS PRESENTLY USED BY PENNSYLVANIA ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE OBSERVED DATA, A FEW REQUIRE FURTHER INVESTIGATION. IN PARTICULAR, THE INFLUENCE OF PAVEMENT AGE ON THE STRUCTURAL COEFFICIENTS OF LIME AND CEMENT STABLIZED BASES REQUIRES STUDY. ALSO, THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PLANT AND FIELD MIX BITUMINOUS BASE COURSES REQUIRES FURTHER INVESTIGATION. DIFFICULTIES IN PREDICTING PAVEMENT SERVICE LIFE ON THE BASIS OF PAST PERFORMANCE RENDER FIRM CONCLUSIONS CONCERNING SOIL SUPPORT CHARACTERISTICS IMPOSSIBLE.
