THE PROBLEM OF ROCK WEATHERABILITY IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

THE PROBLEM OF THE WEATHERING PROPERTIES OF ROCKS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING IS EXAMINED IN RELATION TO THE LIFE AND FAILURE OF STRUCTURES. TYPICAL CASES OF WEATHERING ARE MENTIONED, AND THE PARAMETERS WHICH ENABLE WEATHERING CONDITIONS TO BE CHARACERIZED ARE ANALYZED. THE PROBLEMS OF THE QUANTIFICATION AND SPECIFICATION OF WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS ARE EXAMINED, AND THE NEED IS STRESSED TO COMPARE ROCKS IN WHICH THESE PROBLEMS ARE FOUND WITH THOSE OF WHICH THE IN-SITU BEHAVIOR IS KNOWN. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THIS COMPARISON BE DONE BY MEANS OF QUICK WEATHERING TESTS AND THE SOXHOLD TEST IS INDICATED FOR THE PURPOSE. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE INTEREST OF SYSTEMATICALLY OBSERVING THE BEHAVIOR OF STRUCTURE AND OF CARRYING OUT PETROGRAPHIC STUDIES OF ROCK WEATHERING PHENOMENA. /TRRL/
