AN EXTENSION TO THE THEORY OF THE CONSTANT HEAD IN SITU PERMEABILITY TEST
THE THEORY OF THE IN SITU CONSTANT HEAD PERMEABILITY TEST (GIBSON, 1963) IS SHOWN TO BE STRICTLY VALID ONLY IF THE SOIL BEHAVES AS A POROUS PERFECTLY ELASTIC MEDIUM. FOR THIS IDEAL SOIL THE FLOW RATE IS GIVEN BY AN EXPRESSION WHICH HOLDS NOT ONLY FOR INFLOW AND OUTFLOW TESTS, BUT ALSO FOR EITHER A RIGID OR AN INFINITELY COMPRESSIBLE PIEZOMETER TIP (I.E. A SPHERICAL CAVITY). THE THEORY IS EXTENDED TO TAKE SOME ACCOUNT OF THE ANELASTIC BEHAVIOUR OF REAL SOILS AND IT IS THEN FOUND THAT THE PIEZOMETER COMPRESSIBILITY, THE MAGNITUDE OF THE PORE WATER PRESSURE PARAMETER A OF THE SURROUNDING SOIL, AND THE DIRECTION OF FLOW, ALL HAVE AN IMPORTANT INFLUENCE ON THE RELATION BETWEEN FLOW RATE AND TIME. /TRRL/
