SITE EXPLORATION IN TUNNELLING PROJECTS
THE REPORT DISCUSSES THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS OF SITE INVESTIGATION: ORGANIZATION OF A SITE EXPLORATION PROGRAM AND GEOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF IMPORTANCE TO TUNNELLING, INCLUDING ROCK TYPES, CHEMICAL DEFECTS IN ROCKS, MECHANICAL DEFECTS, STRATIFICATION, AND SUB-SURFACE WATER. THE DETERMINATION OF THE VIRGIN STRESS FIELD IS ALSO DISCUSSED, INCLUDING GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS WHICH AFFECT THE VIRGIN STATE OF STRESS, GRAVITATIONAL STRESS, TECTONIC STRESS, AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE VIRGIN STATE OF STRESS ON TUNNELLING. /TRRL/
