CAPITAL SPENDING FOR CONTROLS IN '72 TOPS $100 MILLION
Capital spending for systems control equipment in 1972 by railroads and transit authorities in the U.S. and Canada will come to $113.1 million. For railroads, the total is $96.5 million, categorized as follows: communications-$44.5 million; data processing-$8.0 million; and signaling-$44.0 million. U.S. and Canadian transit authorities are planning capital expenditures of $5.5 million for data processing; and $10.500 million for signaling. On the non-capital side, equipment and hardware for replacement, and rental of equipment and facilities, railroads will be spending as follows: communications-$68.5 million; data processing-$85.0 million. Transit authorities spending in the non-capital areas come to $7.0 million for communications; $3.2 million for data processing; and $8.0 million for signaling.
