HYDRAULIC TRANSPORT OF SOLID MATERIALS IN PIPES
THIS PAPER OUTLINES THE METHOD AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE EMPLOYED AT THE B.H.R.A. TO DETERMINE THE SHEAR STRESS/RATE OF SHEAR RELATIONSHIP FOR VARIOUS SLURRIES OF FINE PARTICLES MIXED WITH WATER, USING A CAPILLARY VISCOMETER. METHODS OF CALCULATION OF FULL SCALE PIPELINE HEAD LOSS FROM VISCOMETER RESULTS ARE GIVEN AND COMPARISON OF SUCH A CALCULATION WITH MEASURED HEAD LOSS IN A 12 DIAMETER PIPELINE IS SHOWN. A 1.5 INCH DIAMETER MODEL PIPELINE RIG HAS ALSO BEEN USED TO CHECK PIPELINE HEAD LOSS CALCULATIONS AND TO STUDY PROBLEMS OF SETTLEMENT IN A PIPELINE. (A).
