EDP ACTIVITY INCREASES IN '72

Continued activity in the data processing area will be concerned in large proportion with expanding management information systems, implementing AAR car repair billing, expanding machine preparation of freight bills, and replacing older computers and peripherals with newer, more sophisticated equipment. U.S. and Canadian Railroads are planning to spend $93 million in 1972 for data processing equipment and facilities. Another $3.9 million will be spent by transit authorities. These figures include capital items (hardware and software) and non-capital items (leasing of hard and software). A survey of acitivity during 1971 and activity plans for 1972, by railroad, is given.
