ROCK MASS INVESTIGATIONS. EVALUATION OF METHODS

THE GREAT INCREASE IN UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION, COMPRISING EVERYTHING FROM TRANSPORTATION AND UTILITIES LINES TUNNELS TO ROCK CHAMBERS FOR THE STORAGE OF PROPANE, PETROL, OIL, WARM WATER AND COMPRESSED AIR, INTER ALIA, CREATES A GREAT DEMAND FOR RELIABLE METHODS FOR DETAILED INVESTIGATIONS OF THE ROCK MASS. FOR THE PRESENT THERE EXISTS NO FULLY RELIABLE METHOD FOR INVESTIGATING ROCK IN DEPTH. THIS REPORT REVEALS THAT ALL THE METHODS HERE DEALT WITH -- PERCUSSIVE INVESTIGATION DRILLING, CORE DRILLING, AND TV EXAMINATION OF DRILL HOLES -- CONTAIN MANY SUBJECTIVE ASPECTS WHERE THE RELIABILITY OF THE METHOD IS TO A GREAT EXTENT DEPENDETN ON THE ABILITY AND ACCURACY OF THE FIELD PERSONNEL. IN THE REPORT THE VARIOUS INVESTIGATION METHODS ARE DESCRIBED AND ANALYZED IN DETAIL. THE RISKS FOR ERRONEOUS INTERPRETATIONS OF THE INFORMATION OBTAINED, WHICH MAY HAVE THEIR ORIGIN IN THE METHOD CHOSEN, ARE TREATED AT LENGTH. AS A RESULT OF THE INCOMPLETE NATURE OF THE BASIC MATERIAL, IT HAS PROVED POSSIBLE ONLY TO EASTABLISH A FRAMEWORK FOR THE EVALUATION OF THE QUALITY AND RELIABILITY OF INFORMATION OBTAINED IN INVESTIGATIONS OF THE ROCK MASS. USING THIS FRAMEWORK AS A BASIS HOWEVER IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO ELABORATE A SYSTEM FOR ABSOLUTE EVALUATIONS OF SUCH INFORMATION. WITH THIS GOAL, THE CONTINUATION OF THIS INVESTIGATION SHOULD LEAD TO A STANDARDIZATION OF TESTING PROCEDURES SO THAT QUALITY REQUIREMENTS IN ROCK MASS INVESTIGATIONS CAN BE SPECIFIED IN THE FUTURE. /AUTHOR/
