THE DIVISION OF SOILS AND GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING OF THE TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS BECAME OPERATIONAL IN SEPTEMBER 1971. THIS REPORT TO THE 54TH ANNUAL TENNESSEE HIGHWAY CONFERENCE BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE DIVISION TREATS THE PROBLEMS THAT ENGINEERING GEOLOGY FACES IN TENNESSEE, THE ROLE OF THE NEW DIVISION IN ADDRESSING THEM, AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF THIS ROLE TO OTHER ELEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS.
