STUDY OF THE MOST CONVENIENT SOLUTIONS FOR CONTINENTAL EROSION PROBLEMS. SOIL EROSION IN ROADS - EROSION CRITERIA /IN PORTUGUESE/
THE MECHANICAL, PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, WHICH MAY AFFECT THE RESISTANCE TO WEATHERING OF 26 SOILS SELECTED ALONG THE NORTHERN HIGHWAY ARE EXAMINED. THE SOILS CHOSEN WERE STUDIED IN THE LABORATORY AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS WERE RELATED TO THEIR IN-SITU BEHAVIOR. IT WAS FOUND THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO DIFFERENTIATE THE SOILS WHICH WITHSTAND EROSION FROM THOSE THAT DO NOT BY USING ONLY TWO PARAMETERS. A PROVISIONAL EROSION CRITERION IS ESTABLISHED, BASED ON SWELLING AND GRADING (USING CONSTANT A OR, AS A QUICK ALTERNATIVE, THE PERCENTAGE WHICH PASSES A NO. 40 ASTM SIEVE). /TRRL/
