A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION OF THE PROPERTIES AND SUITABILITY FOR STABILIZATION OF SANDS FROM DAR ES SALAAM, TANGANYIKA

A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED OF TWO SOILS WHICH WERE SELECTED AS BEING REPRESENTATIVE OF 14 ESSENTIALLY SIMILAR SOIL SAMPLES SENT TO THE LABORATORY FROM DAR ES SALAAM, TANGANYIKA. THE INVESTIGATION COMPRISED CLASSIFICATION TESTS, COMPACTION TESTS AT THREE LEVELS OF COMPACTIVE EFFORT: (1) BRITISH STANDARD, (2) MODIFIED AASHO AND (3) VIBRATING TO REFUSAL, CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO TESTS UPON THE NATURAL SOILS AND CYLINDER PENETRATION RATIO TESTS UPON THE SOILS STABILIZED WITH DIFFERENT PROPORTIONS OF PORTLAND CEMENT. CPR VALUES OF 200% WERE OBTAINED FROM BOTH SOILS STABILIZED WITH 6% OF CEMENT AND MOULDED AT OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT BY APPROXIMATE BRITISH STANDARD COMPACTION. A LINEAR RELATION WAS SHOWN TO EXIST BETWEEN CPR AND UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS FOR BOTH SOILS WHEN TREATED WITH DIFFERENT PROPORTIONS OF CEMENT.
