A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION TO COMPARE THE VALUES AND VARIABILITIES OF CYLINDER PENETRATION RATIO AND UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH RESULTS FOR A TROPICAL GRAVEL STABILIZED WITH 4 PER CENT PORTLAND CEMENT

CYLINDER PENETRATION RATIO (CPR) VALUES FOR THE BOTTOM FACES OF DYNAMICALLY COMPACTED SPECIMENS AND FOR BOTH FACES OF STATICALLY COMPACTED SPECIMENS, WERE OF THE SAME ORDER AND WERE RELATIVELY HIGHER THAN VALUES FOR THE TOP FACES OF DYNAMICALLY COMPACTED SPECIMENS BY NEARLY 20%. FROM CONSIDERATIONS OF THE LIKELY DENSITY GRADIENTS, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE CPR VALUES MOST APPROPRIATE TO THE MEAN DENSITY WOULD BE THE AVERAGE TAKEN FOR BOTH FACES OF A DYNAMICALLY COMPACTED SPECIMEN. IT WAS SHOWN THAT FOR RELIABLE MEAN VALUES OF CPR AND AN UNCONFIRMED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TO BE OBTAINED, FOUR TEST REPETITIONS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED MINIMAL. WHERE THE RELATION BETWEEN STRENGTH AND AN INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (E.G. CEMENT CONTENT) IS BEING CONSIDERED IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO TAKE THE MEAN OF LESS THAN FOUR TEST VALUES FOR EACH CONDITION.
