SIMPLE DEVICE DEVELOPED FOR SOIL LOAD-BEARING TESTS
IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY ENGINEERS HAVE DEVELOPED A SIMPLE FIELD DEVICE FOR DETERMINING THE LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY OF SOIL. THE LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY OF SOIL IS EXPRESSED IN TERMS OF ITS SHEARING STRENGTH, WHICH DERIVES FROM SOIL COHESION AND INTERNAL FRICTION. THE WORKING MEMBERS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL MODEL ARE TWO CURVES, LATERALLY-CORRUGATED STEEL SHOES ACTUATED BY TWO HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS - IN THE PROTOTYPE THESE WERE AUTOMOBILE BRAKE CYLINDERS. THE DEVICE IS THEN EXPANDED TO CONTACT THE SOIL, AND IT IS PULLED. SINCE BOTH THE EXPANSION FORCE AND THE PULLING FORCE ARE MEASURED SEPARATELY, SOIL COHESION AND ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION MAY BE EVALUATED.
