CHOICE OF HOME WORK LOCATIONS AND THE VALUE OF COMMUTER TRAVEL TIME IN OSLO
THIS NOTE IS A TRANSLATION OF CHAPTER 4 OF THE INSTITUTE OF TRANSPORT ECONOMICS REPORT NO. OFF 63, JUNE 1970 "VALUE OF COMMUTER TRAVEL TIME IN OSLO". DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A SIMPLE MODEL DERIVED FOR ESTIMATING TRAVEL TIME VALUES FOR RESIDENTS OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED NORWEGIAN TOWNS. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE WEAKNESSES OF THE MODEL MAINLY ITS INELASTICITY (IT ASSUMES THAT NEITHER THE SIZE OF THE PLOT NOR THE NUMBER OF JOURNEYS PER YEAR VARIES WITH THE DISTANCE FROM THE CENTRE). THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE VALUE OF PLOTS IN A GIVEN YEAR AND THE TRAVEL TIME TO THE CENTRE IN THAT AREA IS EXPRESSED MATHEMATICALLY. SOME EXOGENEOUS FACTORS (EG. LOCATION NEAR A SOURCE OF NOISE OR POLLUTION, OWN SHORE LINE, DESIRABLE AREA ETC.) CAN, IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS BE ALLOWED FOR IN THE MODEL WITH THE AID OF BINARY AUXILIARY VARIABLES. SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACT NO 203623.
