THE TREATMENT OF SECONDARY INFLUENCES IN MODAL SPLIT MODELS - INCOME VARIATIONS, PARTY SIZE OR COMPOSITION AND THE DURATION OF TIME SAVINGS

THIS NOTE ATTEMPTS TO EXAMINE THE PROBLEMS ARISING DURING THE STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF INCOME LEVELS, THE STATUS WITHIN THE HOUSEHOLD, SIZE AND COMPOSITION OF THE PARTY MAKING THE JOURNEY, LENGTH OF JOURNEY MADE, AND TIME SAVING OBTAINED ON THE MODAL SPLIT AND VALUE OF TIME. THE VARIOUS METHODS ADOPTED OR SUGGESTED TO DEAL WITH EACH PROBLEM ARE DISCUSSED. STRATIFICATION OF THE MODEL IS SUGGESTED AS AN EFFECTIVE METHOD OF TESTING HYPOTHESES RELATING TO SECONDARY FACTORS AND THE VALUE OF TIME. AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO STRATIFICATION, VARIOUS METHODS OF DERIVING SECONDARY RELATION THROUGH THE TIME-VALUE/ INCOME RATIO ARE ALSO OUTLINED. /TRRL/
