TRIP GENERATION FUNCTIONS AND RESEARCH INTO VALUE OF TIME
A STUDY IS MADE OF THE USE OF TRIP DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION FOR DETERMINING A POTENTIAL TRADE-OFF BETWEEN JOURNEY TIME AND JOURNEY COST WHICH IS SUFFICIENTLY PRECISE TO BE INVESTIGATED EMPIRICALLY. ONCE THE RATE OF TRADE-OFF CAN BE SPECIFIED IT IS POSSIBLE TO DISCOVER THE VALUE TRAVELLERS PLACE ON CHANGES IN THEIR JOURNEY TIME. FOR PRACTICAL REASONS ONLY "ONE-ENDED" TRIP DISTRIBUTION FUNCTIONS ARE CONSIDERED, AND DIFFERENTIAL SPEEDS BETWEEN ROUTES CONSIDERED MUST EXIST IF COLLINEARITY IS TO BE PREVENTED RENDERING THE CONCEPT OF A TRADE-OFF EMPHATICALLY MEANINGLESS. THESE CRITERIA ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE MET IN THE CASE OF RECREATIONAL AND HOSPITAL TRIPS, AND POSSIBLY SHOPPING AND ENTERTAINING TRIPS. SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACT NOS. 203624 TO 203648.
