INVESTIGATION OF TRAFFIC DYNAMICS BY AERIAL PHOTOGRAMMETRY TECHNIQUES

THIS REPORT DOCUMENTS THE PROGRESS THE PROGRESS MADE DURING THE REPORTING PERIOD IN A CONTINUING RESEARCH PROJECT AIMED AT IMPROVING AND SIMPLIFYING AN AERIAL PHOTOGRAMMETRY TECHNIQUE FOR PRACTICAL APPLICATION IN HIGHWAY DESIGN AND TRAFFIC OPERATIONS. THE REPORT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS. PART I DESCRIBES THE RESULTS OF A STUDY UNDERTAKEN FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEVELOPING AN IMPROVED MODEL RELATING AVERAGE SPEED AND TRAFFIC DENSITY. THE PROPOSED MODEL IS MULTI-LINEAR IN FORM AND CONSISTS OF SIX INDIVIDUAL LINE SEGMENTS. PART II PRESENTS A SUMMARY OF TWO PILOT STUDIES IN WHICH AERIAL SURVEY TECHNIQUE WAS USED TO INVESTIGATE PROBLEMS OF FREEWAY OPERATION DURING THE MORINIG AND EVENING PEAK FLOW PERIODS. THE FINAL OUTPUT OF EACH STUDY IS IN THE FORM OF PEAK HOUR FREEWAY CONTROL STRATEGY BASED ON FIXED-TIME RAMP METERING.
