INTERNATIONAL AUTOMATION COMMISSION-CALCULATION OF ROUTE PERFORMANCE AND OPERATING RESULTS OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT UNDERTAKINGS, AND ITS EFFECTS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING

THE OBJECTIVES ARE TO ANALYZE PERFORMANCES AND THEN TO MAKE CONCLUSIONS BASED ON THESE ANALYSES. HOW THE HAMBURGER HOCHBAHN AG (HHA), WEST GERMANY, UTILIZED COMPUTERS IN ITS ANALYSIS IS EXPLAINED. FOR INSTANCE A FLOW CHART WOULD SHOW THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS AS: NAMES OF STOPPING PLACES, FARES, DISTANCES, JOURNEY TIME ALONG THE ROUTE WITH INDIVIDUAL (TRAIN, TRAM OR BUS) TRIP DATA: STARTING POINT, TERMINATION POINT, DISTANCE, AND JOURNEY TIME OF EACH TRIP, ONE OBTAINS THE TIMETABLE WITH DETAILS OF INDIVIDUAL TRIPS: DAY OF THE WEEK, ROUTE DEPARTURE TIME, TYPE OF VEHICLE, JOURNEY TIME, JOURNEY DISTANCE. A TRIP DATA STORE IS OBTAINED WHICH CONTAINS THE SCHEDULED SERVICES FOR A SPECIFIC TIMETABLE PERIOD PRINTED OUT IN TERMS OF DISTANCE AND TIME. THE TURN-ROUND DATA STORE IS DERIVED FROM THE ROUTE AND TRIP DATA AND THE TURN-ROUND SCHEDULE WITH DETAILS OF ACTUAL JOURNEY TIME, LAYOVER TIME AND REST PERIODS. THE ROUTE PERFORMANCE CALCULATION INDICATES THE OPERATING PERFORMANCE AS A WHOLE, AND SUBDIVIDED INTO INDIVIDUAL ROUTES. THE ROUTE PERFORMANCE CALCULATION DATA FORMS THE BASIS FOR THE ALLOCATION OF REVENUE AND COSTS FOR DIFFERENT ROUTES. NEXT A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ABOVE SEQUENCE IS PROVIDED IN AN ATTEMPT TO OFFER A COMPLETE ANALYSIS; SUPPLEMENTARY. INFORMATION IS PRESENTED TO SHOW ALL THE POSSIBILITIES THAT EXIST, AND THUS MUST BE CONSIDERED, IN ANY GIVEN ANALYSIS. FINALLY SOME OF THE PROBLEMS (E. G. TIME LAG) AND SOME OF THE MODIFICATIONS IN DATA COLLECTION, DATA EVALUATION, AND MODELLING ARE EXPLORED.
