REMOTE SENSING: WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO URBAN AND REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT

THE CURRENT INTEREST AND RESEARCH IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF SOPHISTICATED INFORMATION SYSTEMS HAS DIRECTED ATTENTION TO THE FEASIBILITY OF REMOTE SENSING OF URBAN PHENOMENA INCLUDING URBAN TRANSPORTATION. THIS PAPER REVIEWS THE VARIOUS SYSTEMS OF REMOTE SENSING AND EXPLORES THEIR ROLE IN THE STUDY OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT. IT EXAMINES UTILIZATION OF AND EXPERIMENTATION WITH REMOTE SENSING IN URBAN TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND RELATES THE EXPERIENCES TO DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES. IT APPEARS THAT REMOTE SENSING IS MORE LIKELY TO BE COST-EFFECTIVE WITH RESPECT TO THE RELATIVELY STATIC PARTS OF THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM THAN THE DYNAMIC ASPECTS. THE GENERAL FEASIBILITY OF REMOTE SENSING, HOWEVER, CANNOT BE CLEARLY ESTABLISHED PRIOR TO DEVELOPMENT OF REALISTIC DATA ON BENEFITS AND COSTS. /AUTHOR/
