USE OF DRIVER DISPLAY AND CONTROL AIDS TO STABILIZE AND IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW

VISUAL DISPLAY AIDING VIA A HEAD-UP DISPLAY DEVICE TO PRESENT CAR-FOLLOWING INFORMATION, CURVE PREVIEW INFORMATION, AND ROAD SIGN INFORMATION, AND CONTROL AIDING FOR CAR-FOLLOWING WERE STUDIED. ROAD STUDIES SHOWED THAT AIDING IMPROVED SUBJECT-DRIVER PERFORMANCE AND REDUCED DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DRIVERS. THE COMPUTER SIMULATION TRANSLATED THESE BENEFITS SHOWN IN TWO-CAR PERFORMANCE TO IMPROVEMENTS IN PLATOON TRAFFIC FLOW AND SAFETY. THE EQUIPMENT DEVELOPED, THE METHODOLOGIES TESTED, AND THE BASELINE DATA PROVIDED BY THE ROAD STUDIES, ALONG WITH THE COMPUTER SIMULATION OF PLATOONS, PROVIDE A COMPLETE SYSTEMATIC TECHNIQUE FOR EVALUATING VARIOUS DRIVER AIDS. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT DRIVER AIDING DOES BENEFIT TRAFFIC FLOW AND SAFETY, AND THAT FURTHER RESEARCH WITH DRIVER AIDING SHOULD BE STUDIED TO FURTHER IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY OF OUR TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM. /AUTHOR/
