SIMULATION OF TRAFFIC FLOW ON THE I-291 AND ROUTE 15 THREE LEVEL DIAMOND INTERCHANGE
THE RESEARCH CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS HAS THREE MAJOR STUDY AREAS IN ADDITION TO AN EXTENSIVE LITERATURE SURVEY: (1) SELECTION OF VEHICULAR AND GEOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED TO PROGRAM THE VARIOUS MODELS; (2) DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF SELECTED PROGRAMS IN FORTRAN IV; AND (3) DEVELOPMENT OF OPTIONAL SIGNALIZATION SCHEMES FOR THE DIAMOND INTERCHANGE, USING THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE SIMULATION MODELS. THE PRESENT REPORT DESCRIBES THE SIMULATIONS PROGRAMS CURRENTLY BEING TESTED AND EVALUATED. WITHIN THE GPSS (GENERAL PURPOSE SYSTEM SIMULATION) PACKAGE, ONE PROGRAM THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED STORES THE POSITION AND VELOCITY OF EACH VEHICLE IN THE INTERCHANGE, WHILE A SECOND COMPUTES LINK TRAVEL TIME. USE OF TWO PROGRAMS AVOIDS THE NECESSITY OF STORING AND UPDATING POSITING AND VELOCITY FOR EACH VEHICLE BUT MAKES MORE DIFFICULT THE REALISTIC ACCOMODATION OF LARGE VARIATIONS IN TRAFFIC VOLUME. IT IS HOPED THAT THE STUDY WILL ALSO PROVIDE SOME INDICATION OF THE FEASIBILITY OF USING ON-SITE TV SURVEILLANCE FOR REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION OF THE INTERCHANGE FACILITY.
