USER ASPECTS - PART 3 - MOTORWAY SERVICE AREAS

NEW IDEAS HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED AS A RESULT OF OPERATIONAL EXPERIENCE WITH SERVICE AREAS. THE PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION FOR NEW CONTRACTS AND THE DEVELOPERS' RESPONSIBILITIES ARE DESCRIBED. THE DIFFICULTIES IN MAINTAINING A 24-HOUR SERVICE AND IN OVERCOMING MISUSE OF FACILITIES ARE OUTLINED. THE NEED FOR COMPETITION AND CONTROL TO MAINTAIN A HIGH STANDARD IS EMPHASIZED, AND THE SPACING OF SERVICE AREAS IS DISCUSSED. FINALLY, COMPARISON IS MADE WITH THE USA AND OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE.
