THE INFLUENCE OF ADAPTATION ON DRIVER'S ESTIMATIONS OF SPEED

THE AUTHOR STUDIES ERRORS OF JUDGEMENT WHICH OCCUR AFTER A DRIVER ADJUSTED HIS SPEED TO A DEFINED LIMIT, FOR EXAMPLE AT MOTORWAY EXIT. SO THAT DATA COULD ALSO BE OBTAINED ON ERRORS MADE BY FRONT-SEAT PASSENGERS, A SERIES OF TESTS WAS CARRIED OUT ON SUBJECTS IN THE DRIVING SEAT (ACTIVE) AND IN THE PASSENGER SEAT (PASSIVE). IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TEST SUBJECTS TRAVELLING AS PASSENGERS ESTIMATE SPEED LESS WELL THAN THOSE IN THE DRIVING SEAT. HOWEVER, ERRORS MADE BY DRIVERS INCREASE, THE GREATER THE DEGREE OF ALTERATION IN SPEED; THIS IS DUE TO FAULTY ADAPTATION WHICH RESULTS IN PERCEPTUAL ERRORS. /TRRL/
