SOME INJURY MECHANISMS IN NEW CAR COLLISIONS
AUTOMOBILE CRASHES INVOLVING CARS OF THE PRESENT AND PAST MODEL YEAR WERE INVESTIGATED. IT WAS FOUND THAT BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE NEWER MODEL CARS, OCCUPANT INJURIES WERE MARKEDLY REDUCED IN EXTENT AND SEVERITY. OCCUPANT EJECTION VIA DOOR OPENINGS IS MARKEDLY REDUCED DUE TO CHANGES IN THE LOCK STRIKER MECHANISM. THE ENERGY ABSORBING STEERING COLUMN, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL PADDING, THE NEW THICKER LAMINATE WINDSHIELD AND OTHER SAFETY FEATURES ARE ALL CONTRIBUTING TO THE REDCUCTION IN THE NUMBER OF FATAL INJURIES AND DECREASING THE SEVERITY OF OTHER INJURIES. /HSL/
