ANALYSIS FOR THE NEAR FLOW FIELD FOR HIGH SPEED VEHICLES IN TUBES
THE RESULTS FROM AN ANALYSIS OF THE NEAR FLOW FIELD ARE COMPARED WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA FROM MODEL TESTS. ALSO THE DEPENDENCE OF THE DRAG COEFFICIENT ON THE MACH NUMBER AHEAD OF THE VEHICLE IS INVESTIGATED AND RELATED TO THE VEHICLE-TO-FLOW VELOCITY RATIO. THE ANALYSIS IS ONE-DIMENSION COMPRESSIBLE, VISCOUS FLOW THEORY ASSUMING QUASI-STEADY FLOW AND CONSTANT STAGNATION ENTHALPY IN VEHICLE COORDINATES. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS WERE OBTAINED FROM A TEST FACILITY WITH A TUBE 200 FEET LONG AND 1 INCH IN DIAMETER. THE FACILITY PROVIDED DRAG FORCES, HISTORIES OF STATIC WALL PRESSURES IN THE NEAR FLOW FIELD AND DYNAMIC PRESSURES. GRAPHICAL COMPARISONS OF THE DRAG COEFFICIENT AS A FUNCTION OF MACH NUMBER SHOW GOOD AGREEMENT BETWEEN COMPUTED AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE NOISE, GAP AND BASE REGIONS TO THE TOTAL DRAG IS DISCUSSED, AND ESTIMATES OF THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT FOR THE GAP FLOW ARE PROVIDED. /AUTHOR/
