HYDRODYNAMIC VIBRATION DAMPER
Wave excited low frequency vibration in a ship can cause stresses in the hull and is uncomfortable for the crew. This phenomenon, which results in the central part of the ship oscillating vertically with respect to the ends, has been known for many years but it has only attracted attention as a potentially serious problem with the advent of very large all-welded ships. A hydrodynamic vibration damper has now been developed by the Ship Division of the National Physical Lab., and tests on the Naval ship 'Scorpion', sponsored by the National Research Development Corp., have given encouraging results. It is expected that this device will virtually eliminate this particular vibration problem.
