ON THE ROBUSTNESS OF CERTAIN ASSUMPTIONS IN THE MERGING DELAY PROBLEM
EARLY STUDIES OF THE PROBLEM OF MERGING DELAY AT AN UNCONTROLLED INTERSECTION USED THE ASSUMPTION OF A STEP GAP ACCEPTANCE FUNCTION. MANY MEASUREMENTS EXIST OF GAP ACCEPTANCE FUNCTIONS THAT ARE NOT OF THIS FORM. THE AUTHORS EXAMINE THE THEORETICAL CONSEQUENCES OF REPLACING A REALISTIC GAP ACCEPTANCE FUNCTION BY ONE THAT IS A STEP FUNCTION, AND SHOW THAT SEVERAL IMPORTANT PARAMETERS ARE RELATIVELY INSENSITIVE TO THE CHANGE, WHEN THE MAIN STREAM OF TRAFFIC FOLLOWS A POISSON DISTRIBUTION. /AUTHOR/
