CAR AND BUS JOURNEYS TO AND FROM CENTRAL LONDON IN PEAK HOURS
STUDIES OF THE EFFECTS OF CHANGING THE PROPORTIONS OF COMMUTERS TRAVELLING BY CAR AND BUS IN LONDON HAVE TENDED TO DEAL ONLY WITH THE CENTRAL AREA. A FULLER MODEL WOULD HAVE TO COPE WITH THE SECTION OF THE JOURNEY OUTSIDE THE CENTRAL AREA. THIS IS IMPORTANT NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE TIME SPENT TRAVELLING, BUT ALSO BECAUSE WHEN THE FULL JOURNEY IS CONSIDERED IT IS POSSIBLE TO INCLUDE TIME SPENT WALKING, WAITING AND PARKING. A RANDOM SAMPLE OF JOURNEYS WAS OBTAINED FROM THE LONDON TRAFFIC SURVEY HOME INTERVIEWS STUDY. EACH JOURNEY WAS THEN MADE BY A TEAM OF GREATER LONDON COUNCIL EMPLOYEES, ONCE BY CAR AND ONCE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT, RECORDING THE ORIGINS, DESTINATIONS AND TIMES FOR EACH SECTION OF THE JOURNEY. USING A MODIFICATION OF THE FORMULA GIVEN BY SMEED FOR SPEED IN THE CENTRAL AREA, THE EFFECT OF CHANGING THE PROPORTIONS TRAVELLING BY CAR AND BUS WERE EVALUATED. THE CALCULATIONS INDICATE THAT, FOR THE PARTICULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOURNEY TO WORK IN CENTRAL LONDON, IT IS NOT INCONCEIVABLE THAT A BUS-BASED SYSTEM COULD COMPETE AGAINST A MIXED BUS AND CAR SYSTEM, NOT ONLY IN TERMS OF TRAVELLING SPEEDS, BUT ALSO IN AVERAGE DOOR-TO-DOOR JOURNEY TIMES, FOR QUITE LONG JOURNEYS./AUTHOR/
