THE GLASGOW EXPERIMENT IN AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES AN EXPERIMENT IN GLASCOW UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. THE EXPERIMENT IS DESIGNED TO ASSESS EXISTING AND UNCONVENTIONAL TRAFFIC CONTROL SCHEMES UNDER STANDARD CONDITIONS. THE ROAD NETWORK OF 80 SIGNALS IN THE CITY CENTER IS CENTRALLY CONTROLLED BY A FAST DIGITAL ON-LINE COMPUTER, A MARCONI MYRIAD I. SIX CONTROL SCHEMES ARE BEING ASSESSED. THE EQUIPMENT USED IN THE STUDY, THE ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE, AND TECHNIQUES FOR SETTING LINKED FIXED-TIME TRAFFIC ARE DESCRIBED. THE RESULTS TO DATE ARE PRESENTED AND THE PROPOSED FUTURE WORK IS INDICATED. /BPR/
