CAPACITY OF PRIORITY INTERSECTIONS

PRIORITY CONTROL IS ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY USED MEANS OF RESOLVING THE CONFLICTS BETWEEN CROSSING AND MERGING VEHICLES AT HIGHWAY INTERSECTIONS. A MEASURE OF THE PRACTICAL CAPACITY OF A PRIORITY INTERSECTION IS THE AVERAGE DELAY TO MINOR ROAD VEHICLES. THE PRACTICAL CAPACITY MAY BE SAID TO HAVE BEEN REACHED WHEN A SMALL INCREASE IN THE FLOW INTO THE INTERSECTION RESULTS IN GREATLY INCREASED DELAYS TO MINOR ROAD VEHICLES. IN THIS ARTICLE SOME OF THE WORK CARRIED OUT IN THE SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD INTO THE AVERAGE DELAY TO MINOR ROAD VEHICLES AND HENCE THE PRACTICAL CAPACITY OF THE INTERSECTIONS IS DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
