MOVEMENT OF VEHICLES FROM A STATIONARY QUEUE
THE SUCCESSFUL FUNCTIONING OF ANY SYSTEM OF COORDINATED SIGNALS NEEDS TO KNOW DETAILS OF THE BEHAVIOR OF PLATOONS OF VEHICLES, RELEASED FROM TRAFFIC SIGNALS, AS THEY PROGRESS DOWN THE ROAD. THE CHANGES IN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLATOONS AS THEY MOVE AWAY FROM A STATIONARY QUEUE AT TRAFFIC SIGNALS IS INVESTIGATED IN THIS PAPER, TOGETHER WITH METHODS BY WHICH THE DELAY MAY BE MINIMIZED FOR TRAFFIC IN ONE- AND TWO-WAY LINKED SYSTEMS. IN ORDER THAT PLATOONS OF PARTICULAR TIME LENGTHS AND VOLUMES COULD BE STUDIED, OBSERVATIONS WERE CARRIED OUT AT TWO CONTRASTING SITES. THE MOVEMENTS OF OVER 750 VEHICLES WERE USED IN THE ANALYSIS. THE ANALYSIS INCLUDES THE DISTRIBUTION OF PLATOON TIME LENGTHS, THE DISTRIBUTION OF TIME FOR VEHICLES (PLATOONS) TO REACH DESIGNATED POINTS AT SPECIFIED DISTANCES FROM THE LINE AT THE INTERSECTION. AND THE CHANGE IN PLATOON SHAPE. /AUTHOR/
