SPACE-TIME RELATIONSHIPS IN ONE-WAY TRAFFIC FLOW

TIME-HOMOGENEOUS TRAFFIC FLOW IS DEFINED AS MEANING THAT ALL LIMITING TIME AVERAGES EXIST. WITHIN THIS FRAMEWORK, THE DEFINITIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS INVOLVING THE CLASSICAL PARAMETERS AND DISTRIBUTIONS OF TRAFFIC FLOW ARE FORMULATED AND PROVED. FLOW, CONCENTRATION MEAN SPEEDS AND SPEED DISTRIBUTIONS ARE DEFINED BOTH "LOCALLY"-THAT IS, AT A FIXED POINT ALONG THE ROADWAY; AND ALSO "GLOBALLY" - THAT IS, FOR A FINITE STRETCH OF ROADWAY. IF THE FLOW IS, IN ADDITION, SPACE HOMOGENEOUS, THEN DEFINITIONS OF THESE SAME PARAMETERS AND DISTRIBUTIONS AS SPACE AVERAGES, CAN PROVE THAT THE TWO SETS OF DEFINITIONS ARE EQUIVALENT - CRUDELY, THAT TIME AVERAGES EQUAL SPACE AVERAGES. GIVEN AN EXAMPLE OF A "BAD" DEFINITION, CRITERIA ARE DISCUSSED BY WHICH THE SUITABILITY OF THE VARIOUS DEFINITIONS CAN BE JUDGED. AT A FIXED SPACE POINT THE RATIO OF THE SPACE SPEED DISTRIBUTION TO THE TIME SPEED DISTRIBUTION IS PROVEN. MANY OF \HE IMPORTANT IDENTITIES BETWEEN VARIOUS PARAMETERS OF TRAFFIC FLOW FOLLOW FROM THIS RELATIONSHIP. /RRL/
