TRAFFIC DYNAMICS: VISUAL ANGLE CAR FOLLOWING MODELS

IN CAR FOLLOWING MODELS THE RESPONSE OF THE FOLLOWING DRIVER IS COMMONLY EXPRESSED IN A FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP AS RESPONSE = SENSITIVITY X STIMULUS. THE PAPER INVESTIGATES TWO PROPOSED FORMS WHICH THE STIMULUS MAY ASSUME, AND EXPERIMENTALLY TESTS EACH OF THEM FOR GOODNESS-OF-IT WITH OBSERVED DATA. THE TWO FORMS OF THE STIMULUS INVESTIGATED ARE: (1) THE RATE OF CHANGE OF THE VISUAL ANGLE SUBTENDED BY THE LEADING VEHICLE, AND (2) THE ACCELERATION OF THE VISUAL ANGLE SUBTENDED BY THE LEADING VEHICLE. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FIRST OF THESE HAS A HIGH CORRELATION WITH OBSERVED DATA FOR BOTH QUEUE-FORMING AND QUEUE-RELEASING CONDITIONS. THE SECOND EXPRESSION WAS FOUND TO HAVE THE SAME GOODNESS-OF-FIT AS THE FIRST FOR THE QUEUE-RELEASING CONDITION, BUT WAS NOT AS GOOD FOR THE QUEUE-FORMING CONDITION. CONSEQUENTLY, THE HYPOTHESIS THAT THE RATE OF CHANGE OF THE VISUAL ANGLE SUBTENDED BY THE LEADING VEHICLE IS THE MAIN STIMULUS TO THE DRIVER OF THE FOLLOWING CAR IS SEEMINGLY VALID, AT LEAST FOR THIS SET OF OBSERVED DATA. /BPR/
