THE DESIGN OF MULTIPHASE INTERSECTION SIGNAL SYSTEMS

THE ARTICLE PRESENTS A PROCEDURE TO PROVIDE OPTIMAL PHASE SEQUENCE, CYCLE SPLIT, AND CYCLE LENGTH FOR MULTIPHASE TRAFFIC SIGNALS, UNDER AN IMPOSED SET OF DEMANDS. PEDESTRIAN FLOW DEMANDS AND VEHICLE FLOW DEMANDS ARE ANALYZED FOR THE EXAMPLE OF AN INTERSECTION OF TWO, TWO-WAY ARTERIALS. OPTIMIZATION IS BASED ON QUEUE LENGTH AND CYCLE LENGTH MINIMIZATION. THE SIMPLIFIED GRAPHICAL TECHNIQUES PRESENTED IN THE ARTICLE ARE EQUIVALENT TO THOSE USING MORE SOPHISTICATED TECHNIQUES.
