ANN ARBOR TRIES FORD DIAL-A-RIDE EXPERIMENT
DIAL-A-RIDE IS BEING PROVIDED TO 2100 HOMES FEATURING DOORSTEP PICKUP AND DROPOFF. DESTINATION POINTS ARE AVAILABLE ALONG A DOWNTOWN LOOP, COVERING ALL MAJOR INTOWN SHOPPING AREAS, CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENT COMPLEXES, TRANSFER POINTS WITH REGULAR ROUTE BUSES AND ACCESS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN MAIN CAMPUS. FORD MOTOR COMPANY'S TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH AND PLANNING OFFICE DESIGNED THE DISPATCHING SYSTEM AND SERVICE LAYOUT, AS WELL AS PROVIDING A TEST VEHICLE FOR USE IN THE EXPERIMENT. THE DISPATCHER IS IN CONSTANT COMMUNICATION WITH THE DIAL-A-RIDE VEHICLES VIA TWO- WAY RADIO. EACH DIAL-A-RIDE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A TONE ACTIVATED QUICK CALL UNIT SO THAT ONLY MESSAGES FOR THAT SPECIFIC VEHICLE ARE HEARD BY THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. /PT/
