FRICTION TESTS SHOW EFFECTS OF WATER DEPTHS FOR VARIOUS PAVEMENT TYPES
VEHICLE-PAVEMENT INTERACTION RESEARCH HAS PROVIDED FINDINGS ON THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS WATER DEPTHS ON THE FRICTION PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS PAVEMENT TEXTURES AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF VEHICULAR SPEEDS AND TIRE-TREAD DEPTHS. EQUATIONS RELATING THESE VARIABLES HAVE BEEN DETERMINED. SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF SURFACES, 600 FEET LONG AND 24 FT WIDE, WERE TESTED AT THE TEXAS TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE. PAVEMENT WATER DEPTH WAS FOUND TO AFFECT SKID NUMBERS AT 60 MPH SIGNIFICANTLY. FOR A TIRE-TREAD DEPTH OF 0.25 IN. AND A PAVEMENT SURFACE TEXTURE OF 0.03 IN., INCREASING THE WATER DEPTH FROM 0.005 TO 0.300 IN. DECREASED THE 60-MPH SKID NUMBERS BY 34 PERCENT. INCREASES IN TIRE-TREAD DEPTH AND SURFACE TEXTURE INCREASED SKID NUMBERS; WHEREAS, INCREASES IN VEHICLE SPEED DECREASED SKID NUMBERS. MULTIPLE REGRESSION ANALYSES WERE USED TO ASSESS THE EFFECTS OF THE VARIABLES ON THE FRICTION PROPERTIES OF THE DIFFERENT SURFACES. /TTR/
